GREEN Corps
The GREEN (Grow–Renew–Educate- Engage–NH) AmeriCorps Program seeks to harness the assets of higher education institutions to meet the environmental needs of NH communities and assist in their efforts to mitigate the causes and impact of climate change and growth and development. The program is designed to further the work of environmental organizations in NH, while leveraging the growing interest among youth and students in environmental stewardship to develop their capacities as environmental problem-solvers. Members will train youth and students in energy-efficiency, sustainability and environmentally conscious practices as described by the U.S. Department of Energy. Members will recruit volunteers to serve at local organizations in roles that promote environmental stewardship. GREEN AmeriCorps members will work with colleges and K-12 schools to assist them in developing or expanding their recycling programs.
Community organizations or institutions of higher education interested in hosting a GREEN Corps AmeriCorps member should complete a host site application.
2011-2012 CCNH GREEN Corps Members:
Stephanie Doyle – Green Mountain Conservation Group
Serving in AmeriCorps has made me realize how fortunate I have been growing up. Working with these under-privileged kids makes me realize how much the work we do really matters. I feel I have influenced the lives of many kids in a positive way through my work with AmeriCorps. Working in an AmeriCorps job has also allowed me to gain experience doing things I would like to ultimately end up doing as a career.
John Marchessault – Gilsum and Tory Before and After School Program
I’ve just begun my AmeriCorps service in a before and after school program in two small schools. In a short time I’ve been inspired by the young students I work with each day. Some come from difficult backgrounds but they always arrive at the after school program with enthusiasm and energy. In addition, the program coordinators work extremely hard to create fun activities that will challenge the students. The students’ enthusiasm combined with the diligent work of the coordinators make me excited to bring my own environmental learning program to the two schools.
Vicky Stafford – Merrimack County Conservation Association
AmeriCorps has given me the opportunity to work with the community on a daily basis. It is amazing to be able to share information and discuss important environmental concerns which affect everyone in a community. Through these discussions, I have seen students become excited and interested in having a positive change in the environment and future. I love also learning more about environmental challenges and being a part of the forward progress and ongoing education.
