The Fusion Project: Teaching & Supporting Faculty in the Development and Delivery of Online Service-Learning Courses

Maine Campus Compact is inviting 2 faculty members from NH interested in providing online service-learning courses to be part of their Fusion Project.  The Fusion Project aims to integrate service-learning and online learning.  It offers a 2 week online course teaching faculty how to infuse service-learning components into online courses to give students hands on, real-world experience to strengthen learning, create connections the larger community, and improve retention.

The foundation of this course, which takes place May 28 – June 11, 2013, is the Fusion 8 Block Model. Course facilitators will teach this model as faculty participants use its structured framework to develop their online service-learning course. The model will be broken up into 5 units to be completed autonomously over two weeks. Faculty participants will leave with a fully-developed online service-learning course, ready to manage the logistics of an online service-learning course, and experienced in using technologies that will improve student engagement and create community within the course. Unit 1 is a 10am to 3pm face-to-face training in Rockland Maine, while the remainder of the course is online, giving faculty participants the opportunity to experience online learning from the student perspective. Participants can expect to spend a total of 20-25 hours doing Online Service-Learning Course Planning including reading, discussions, writing, group work, practicing technology tools, and reflecting.
