Designing Community Based Research Opportunities for Undergraduates
Designing Community Based Research Opportunities for Undergraduates (a)
Registration Form
In her recent book, Civic Engagement in Higher Education, Barbara Jacoby(2009) states, “Community-based undergraduate research is a promising pedagogical approach that is at the crossroads of three core functions of higher education: undergraduate research, civic engagement, and liberal learning” (p. 196). This session will explore different implementation models of community-based research you might design to enable undergraduate students to engage in authentic research projects that teach vital research skills while providing a community partner with necessary data. The presenters will discuss their direct experiences developing and using these models, and share lessons learned in navigating the complexities of this work. In addition, you will be given an opportunity to develop your own project ideas and/or troubleshoot CBR initiatives already underway.
